Introduction of Tsinghua National Laboratory for Information Science and Technology
 |
Tsinghua National Laboratory for Information Science and Technology is one in the first group of five national laboratories authorized on November 25, 2003 by the Ministry of Science and Technology. The Laboratory is located on the Tsinghua University campus in northwest Beijing and managed by the University.
The Laboratory’s objective is to establish a world-class facility for planning and conducting scientific research to discover technological innovations that directly contribute to China’s development and prosperity. The Laboratory is intended to become a magnet for world-class research in China, a place where leading scientists from around the world can exchange visions and ideas, foster innovations, and create achievements with a significant social, scientific and economic impact. |
|
The National Laboratory has been designed to leverage Tsinghua University’s extensive resources in information science and technology and to develop a creative and open research environment. The Laboratory brings together three Ministry of Education state key labs and three key labs from Tsinghua University’s School of Information Science and Technology.
The Laboratory, furthermore, draws on Tsinghua strengths in its four grade-one disciplines--computer science and technology, electronic science and technology, information and communication engineering, and control science and engineering. The Laboratory will give priority to scientific inquiry into emerging new frontier research areas and inter-disciplinary strategies of investigation.
The National Laboratory’s mission is to make research discoveries with a significant impact in the fundamental theory of information science, the acquisition and collection of information, the communication and networking of information, the processing and computation of information, the basic equipment of information technology, the application of information technology, and scientific exploration based on advanced information technology. The research direction can be divided into five specific areas:
* The Theory, Technology and its Applications of Great Capacity Information Intelligent Processing
* The Theory, Technology and its Applications of Next Generation Networking
* The Theory and Technology of New Generation Wide Band Wireless Communication and Optical Communication
* The Core Technology of novel Micro-electronic and Nano-electronic devices
* Cross Disciplinary research in Bioinformatics, Quantum Computing, Control, Communication and Realization, Cerebral Science, and Believable Software and related areas.
As part of its organizational structure, the Laboratory established an international consultation committee and an academic committee. Corresponding to its five research areas, it has also established a division of public platform and technologies, a division of technical innovation and development, ten basic research divisions, and the Quantum Information Center. The laboratory’s intention is to recruit directors and researchers from China and abroad in a manner which is open, competitive and equitable to insure that the scientists are the best available in the world in their fields.
The National Laboratory is located at the East Gate of Tsinghua University. Most of the laboratory is in a new, state of the art information science and technology facility which covers about 2 hectares and a gross area of 36,010 square meters. The most advanced facility and the best academic atmosphere are shared inside the information science and technology building.
